A consortium consisting of Fulton Hogan Construction, Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM), and the Level Crossing Removal Project has been awarded a lucrative $171 million contract. The alliance has been tasked with carrying out vital infrastructure upgrades on three level crossings located in the southeastern region of Melbourne.
The level crossings in question are situated in Beaconsfield, Progress Street, and Dandenong South. At the Beaconsfield site, an innovative solution will be implemented whereby a new road bridge will be constructed over the rail line. This innovative infrastructure development will enable the level crossing to be removed at an accelerated pace, greatly benefiting the local community.
Similarly, at Progress Street in Dandenong South, a new road bridge will be built to replace the existing level crossing. Furthermore, additional improvements will be made to the intersection leading up to the road bridge. These enhancements aim to enhance traffic flow, alleviate congestion, and create a more efficient transportation network in the area.
The major works at Beaconsfield and Dandenong South are scheduled to commence later this year, with the ambitious goal of completing them by 2025. In the case of the level crossing removal works in Officer, preparations will begin early next year to ensure the smooth execution of the project.
The $171 million contract represents a significant investment in upgrading Melbourne’s transportation infrastructure. The alliance of Fulton Hogan Construction, Metro Trains Melbourne, and the Level Crossing Removal Project will work collaboratively to eliminate these three level crossings, improving safety, enhancing traffic conditions, and reducing travel times for commuters.
With the targeted completion date set for 2025, the project demonstrates a commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the local community and reinforcing Melbourne’s position as a forward-thinking city focused on sustainable urban development and modern transportation systems.
