Victoria is building big in the coming autumn months with transport infrastructure set to enter an intensive phase of construction on more than 120 major projects.

The April school holidays will see nine days of rigorous construction to remove the Toorak Road level crossing, six months ahead of schedule.

Major works taking place between March and May 2020 include:

  • Removing the level crossing at Toorak Road and completing the new rail bridge, six months ahead of schedule.
  • Removing three level crossings in Mentone and Cheltenham and rebuilding two new stations.
  • Building an underground pedestrian connection between Flinders Street Station and the new Town Hall Station for the Metro Tunnel.
  • Upgrading the Sunbury Line, including signalling installations, overhead wiring works and completing a platform extension at West Footscray.
  • Starting works on the Monash Freeway Upgrade, as well as ongoing works on the West Gate Tunnel project.

From July 20, a three-month construction frenzy will begin on the Upfield line to elevate the tracks, build two new stations and remove four level crossings, including the Bell Street crossing.

Premier Daniel Andrews expressed his concern for significant road disruptions throughout the course of construction saying, “If we don’t crack on and get these important projects finished, then instead of our growth being something that takes us to another level as a state, it’ll be something that really compromises our quality of life.”
