⭐ About the role ⭐

The Assistant Accountant is responsible for overseeing day-to-day finance operations while supporting the preparation and analysis of month-end reporting.

This role supervises the Finance Officer, ensures transactional accuracy, and consolidates financial data into structured, review-ready reports for the Finance Manager.

This is a full-time position offering structured hours (Mon-Thurs 8:00am-4:30pm and Fri 8:00am-2:00pm).

The role sits between transactional finance and strategic reporting, acting as the operational link across day-to-day processing, payroll, reconciliations and month-end reporting.

Key elements of the role include:

  • Overseeing daily finance operations and supervising a Finance Officer
  • Assisting with month-end close, journals, accruals and reporting
  • Managing reconciliations (bank, loan and balance sheet)
  • Processing weekly payroll
  • Maintaining job costings, variations and cost-to-complete reporting
  • Supporting BAS/GST, TPAR and QLeave obligations
  • Tracking claims, rebates, extras and commissions
  • Supporting audit processes and driving process improvements

Role Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of core accounting principles, including accruals, revenue recognition and financial reporting within a project-based environment

  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel for data analysis and reporting

  • Confident in analysing financial data, identifying trends and supporting business decisions

  • Proficient across accounting and construction systems (e.g. Xero, Databuild, MyConstruct, OnSite Companion, HubSpot)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage stakeholders professionally

  • Highly organised with strong time management and attention to detail across multiple projects

  • Proactive, client-focused and solution-oriented approach

  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work autonomously and adapt in a fast-paced construction environment

It would suit someone who enjoys being hands-on operationally but also contributing to reporting, analysis and continuous improvement.
