With the approval of new homes skyrocketing (13,527 in December 2020) Australia’s building sector is facing an increase like it has never seen before.

Industry experts put the increase down to a combination of the federal government’s Homebuilder Grants, a spike in the interstate migration, and low interest rates.

While this has been great for all new home builders in Australia it has put pressure on the industry and some builders are struggling to keep up with the demand causing new home builders to wait months for their supplies or trades to be available. Whilst all trades are in high demand, it’s the likes of bricklayers, plasterers, painters and roofing contractors that appear to be highest on the list.

Key points

  • 93,000 Australians are using the federal government’s Homebuilder grants.
  • New home builders are facing months of delays due to shortages in supplies and trades within the construction industry.
  • Application deadline on the 14th of April for the federal government’s Homebuilder grant.
