On top of works which are already underway on the project, there are another six level crossing removals ready to take place across Melbourne in 2021.
Four of these are located in Preston with the remaining two being located in Deer Park, in Melbourne’s West.
The contracts for the construction works have been awarded to alliances and are worth almost $800 million.
These works are expected to create over 1000 full-time jobs throughout peak construction.
As part of the contract, to provide modern facilities and safer, more direct connections to public transport, local shops and parking Bell Street and Preston Stations will also go through a rebuild.
These level crossings are expected to be removed by 2022, with the open space underneath the rail line to be complete in 2023.
A $234 million contract for the project has been awarded at Deer Park by the state government which will see a road underpass as well as an overpass built.
Approximately 400 full time jobs are likely to be generated during peak construction.
Safety improvements are a key factor to these level crossing removals.
The projects early stages will begin this month with completion expected in 2023.
